Determining that your pet has ingested something poisonous, and how much, is not so simple as finding an empty bottle marked “poison”.

Phone inquiries about animals ingesting medications, food items, plants, or household cleaners/chemicals are some of the most common calls to our vet emergency service.

Many toxins are species and/or dose dependent. With some of the more common toxins (chocolate, ibuprofen, etc.) we can easily calculate the estimated dose, but more commonly we will ask you to call an animal poison control hotline at home or en route to the hospital. A toxicologist will then review your pet’s case, provide recommendations, and will also give you a case number that your veterinarian can reference if further treatment is needed.
