The recently retired Czar

Czar – shortly after he retired in 2012

Visitors to our blogs may remember last fall we wrote about our Charity Event and our 2012 Charity partner, NK9WD.   Our “poster child” for last year’s event was “Czar” a retired canine AAPD officer.  “Czar” distinguished himself while serving the AAPD by guarding President Obama, Vice President Biden, and the Dalai Lama during their visits to Ann Arbor. In addition, Czar is credited with approximately 20 “catches” over his career of individuals sought by his AAPD K-9 Handler. His retirement was covered in a story in Ann Arbor.com in the spring of 2012.

Recently Czar’s health was failing and his family had to make the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.  He was well loved by everyone on our staff.   His former handler, Officer Jeff Robinson and Jeff’s parents Mike and Marian Robinson took such good care of Czar.  It was obvious every time they brought Czar in for care that they all loved Czar very much.  Per a recent story on MLive.com, Czar was also loved by everyone in the Robinson’s neighborhood.

Czar had served the AAPD proudly for 9 years, and spent the next 18 months, being loved in his retirement home.  His medical care during retirement was paid for by donations to NK9WD.   If you would like to make a donation to NK9WD for other retired police dogs, please click on this link.

Farewell Officer Czar.  It was an honor to care for you.
