It’s easy to forget about your pet’s teeth—until there’s a problem. That’s why every February is designated National Pet Dental Health Month.

Bad breath, loss of appetite or change in behavior are some possible signs of periodontitis. The AVMA estimates that 80-85% of adult pets are afflicted with this disease.

Periodontitis can cause the aforementioned bad breath, but if left unchecked can cause more serious issues. Some symptoms of periodontitis are gum inflammation or bleeding, and loss of appetite. The bacteria can even enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body, ultimately damaging internal organs. The good news is that it is preventable.

If it’s been a while since you paid any attention to your pet’s mouth, now is a great time to get caught up. Give us a call at 734-662-4474 or bring your furry friend in for an exam today. Remember, just like people, dogs and cats need their teeth cleaned, too!
